Latinos brace for a month
of piñatas and plantains
![]()
I love September! and not because it is one of the most beautiful months weather-wise in New York City, but because it marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, giving way to a wealth of Hispanic-targeted marketing initiatives and thus lots of fun stuff for bloggers to write about.
And while the official celebration hasn’t even started (Hispanic Heritage Month officially runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15) some just couldn’t wait.
Fox News, for its part, is preparing “Noche Buena en September*,” its own take of the celebration, with a special appearance of Chef Don Clark, a.k.a. “The Ambassador of Plantains.”
So fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a chock full of marketing fun!

When we were doing the photography for “Three Guys From Miami Celebrate Cuban,” we got the idea to make several tostones cups to dress up one of the plates. We tried to do it the old fashioned way — cutting a fat plantain and hollowing it out with a knife. Our results were not very photogenic, and we scrapped the whole idea. If only we had the new Tostobueno tostonera! This ingenious plantain smasher actually mashes and forms the plantain into a perfect little cup, suitable for stuffing. You cut the plantains to fit the bottom slot on the Tostobueno and take them through the first frying step as you would a flat tostón.
More fun with the Tostobueno
Off the Broiler
A couple of weeks ago we attended the launch party for the Tostobueno (coming your way just before Christmas on December 13) the cool plaintain smusher/cup maker device designed by chef DonClark Williams. Ever since that party I’ve wanted to do something similarily cool with it, but just was too busy. After getting home from Florida I’ve now got Cuban food on the brain and I’ve become a true fan of the platano
I am searching to purchase a tostonera for tostones rellenos. I’m from New Jersey and am so interested in this tostonera. Do you know of a store or website I can purchase one? When I went into your website and saw this item, I was fascinated with the way it makes tostones for filling.
Please respond.
Thank You
Maria
